Peri menopause symptoms
Perimenopause
is the stage of menopause that a woman goes through many years before the
actual menopause starts, anything up to ten to fifteen years, and here was I
thinking that you only had the menopause and the post menopause to deal with.
There are actually three parts to the menopause?
The Ovaries are
now no longer producing the amount of Estrogen that they were producing so the
body has started to go through ‘the change’ which is another word for the
menopause and all the symptoms which accompany the natural process.
The vast
majority of the time the menopause begins somewhere around 45 to 50 years of
age, but it has been known to begin earlier, this is called the early menopause
or premature ovarian failure.

Symptoms of Perimenopause.
There are many
symptoms which signify that the Perimenopause has begun. They are very similar
to the menopause. The peri menopause symptoms are:
·
Hot flushes – Much like the flushes you
will experience once the menopause actually begins.
·
Breast tenderness – Feels much like
your breasts did when you were developing into a teenager and your breasts were
tender and sore.
·
Your pre-menstrual syndrome tends to
worsen – Men beware! Hard hats required.
·
Decreased libido and sex drive – you
just do not feel like you want to have sex, you are just so tired or just are
not interested at the moment. This has nothing to do with how you actually feel
about your sexual partner. If this is a problem for you then it would be worth
the both of you visiting a relationship counselor who can give you some coping
strategies until this period of your life has passed.
·
Fatigue – Intense tiredness is normal
when it comes to Perimenopause.
·
Irregular periods – You will not be
every four weeks religiously like you were before, you may go 6 weeks or 10
weeks. This can cause worry and stress as you may mistake the missed periods as
pregnancy, but this is not always the case.
·
Vaginal dryness – Discomfort during
sex. You can purchase over the counter lubricants which are specifically
designed for the purpose.
·
Urine leaking – Especially prevalent
when sneezing and coughing.
·
Mood swings – Similar to what happens
just before your periods start. You will be happy one minute and very stressed
the next minute. You may experience depression, anxiety and irritability. This
is all normal, but if it bothers you then a doctor may be able to help you with
this. You are not alone and do not have to suffer alone.
·
Difficulty sleeping – Insomnia is
normal, and remaining asleep. There are times when the hot flushes will hit
during the night waking you up and the need to urinate through the night.
·
Have you forgotten what you have read
already? Not to worry, forgetfulness and lack of concentration are also parts
of Perimenopause. This is also normal. You may find some relief if you nip to
the local (now what is it called, I forgot?) Health food shop and purchase over
the counter vitamin B supplements as this is said to be good for memory and the
brain. Also eating oily fish with Omega 3 in is also a great brain food.
