What actually causes the Menopause?
When a woman reaches that certain age, normally around late forties to
fifty years of age, you will find that the normal process of aging in women
will start – The menopause. The menopause is caused by the body of a woman
reducing the amount of Oestrogen which is produced each month which is the
female sex hormone. This in turn halts the ovulation process which in turn goes
on to halt your periods. Thank the lord, some of us might think.
Although the menopause is not normally known to start before a woman
reaches the age of 45, there are women who begin it earlier; this is sometimes
known as premature ovarian failure. The worst thing about the early menopause
is that it can start at any age. Your body does not hold any prejudice when it
comes to early menopause, it does not matter whether you are 20, 30 or 40.
Needless to say, do not panic about the fact that due to the fact that
you are going through early menopause you will never be able to have children.
This is not the case as in some cases the ovaries continue to function albeit
very intermittently. There is a chance that the ovaries still produce eggs but
just not every month religiously like they did before, so there is still a
chance that you can conceive and have a normal pregnancy and baby like every
other woman.
There are a few possible known causes of early menopause:-
·
Surgery to move
the womb such as a hysterectomy
·
Induced
menopause – This is when the ovaries are removed for whatever reason, such as
ovarian cancer.
·
Chemotherapy or
radiotherapy
·
Some viruses
such as Shingles and Chickenpox
·
Certain medical
conditions such as Downs’s syndrome, Turners syndrome and Addison syndrome.
Menopause is said to appear gradually and will follow a pattern which
consists of about three stages:-
1. Perimenopause – This normally starts a good few years
before the actual menopause begins, this is signified by a drop in oestrogen
and less eggs being produced from the ovaries. (Looks like I have started this
already). It is in the last two years of this period that the body of a woman
actually stops producing eggs altogether and the symptoms of the main menopause
will actually start to show themselves.
2. Menopause – It has now been a year and you have not
had a period, then this is it, the menopause has started. It starts when you
have been period free for a year.
3.
Postmenopause –
This is the final stage of the process. This is when the majority of the
menopause symptoms start to go away and you can relax and start to enjoy
yourself again. Needless to say, Mother Nature likes to twist the knife. When
you have a lack of oestrogen as you do now that you do not produce any anymore,
then you are more likely to suffer from illnesses which are related to a lack
of oestrogen.
